Hoodoos in Dinosaur Provincial Park In central and northern Alberta the arrival of spring is marked by the early flowering of the prairie crocus anemone ; this member of the buttercup family has been recorded flowering as early as March, though April is the usual month for the general population. Both yellow and white sweet clover can be found throughout the southern and central areas of the province. The trees in the parkland region of the province grow in clumps and belts on the hillsides. These are largely deciduous , typically aspen , poplar , and willow. Many species of willow and other shrubs grow in virtually any terrain. On the north side of the North Saskatchewan River evergreen forests prevail for thousands of square kilometres. Aspen poplar , balsam poplar or in some parts cottonwood , and paper birch are the primary large deciduous species. Conifers include jack pine , Rocky Mountain pine, lodgepole pine , both white and black spruce , and the deciduous conifer tamarack. Fauna[ edit ] The bighorn sheep is Alberta’s provincial animal The four climatic regions alpine , boreal forest , parkland , and prairie of Alberta are home to many different species of animals. The south and central prairie was the land of the bison , commonly known as buffalo, its grasses providing pasture and breeding ground for millions of buffalo.

December 29, by Galt 4 Comments Introduction The grain elevator seen here really stands out as unique and was in the early s a highly innovative design, the future of the Alberta grain industry. The Buffalo Sloped Bins BSB was the dawn of a bold new era, modern and efficient — it was the design that would eventually replace hundreds of outdated wooden grain elevators all over the province on the sleepy branchlines and busy mainlines. Ultimately however, for a number of reasons, it entered into the era when the grain industry was in a state of flux with to many old grain elevators, on-going transportation issues with the railways, some construction problems with a new design, and an economic recession all played a part so that in the end only a few were built.
Background on the Buffalos From the early s to the late early s, the wood grain elevator ruled the roost in Alberta and in fact all over western Canada. A few years of bumper crops and high grain prices kept the wooden elevators busy and added well to the profits of the Pool. With some of the additional profit, AWP decided to do some design work with an engineer from Edmonton, by the name of Klaus U. Drieger and his company, Buffalo Engineering Ltd. Using pre-cast structural components would help the problem of maintaining a large work force and help reduce costs in building grain elevators in remote locations.
Concrete would also help in reducing overpressure on the elevator walls during filling and emptying — these pressures are often difficult to determine and costly to design for and to fix if a hole blows out the side of an elevator.

Two in-range licences covering 24 km2, which had been posted for the August 19 rights auction, have since been withdrawn by Alberta Energy. April On April 29, in the midst of an election, the Alberta government planned another major auction of new oil and gas leases on 35, hectares km2 of endangered mountain and boreal woodland caribou habitat, without rules to reduce surface disturbance below current excessive levels.
Since September the Prentice government has auctioned over km2 of Alberta caribou ranges for oil and gas leases. On March 6, the Alberta government postponed the auction within the endangered Redrock Prairie Creek mountain woodland caribou range. Following this decision, the Alberta government posted new energy leases for sale in the same endangered mountain caribou range in west central Alberta where it cancelled lease sales on March 6.
Yet the Alberta government plans to sell off a further 1, hectares of energy leases in these endangered caribou ranges from May 14 to June 25, in apparent disregard of the habitat crisis facing its caribou. Alberta Wilderness Association AWA called on the Alberta government to stop undermining caribou survival chances and to halt new leasing and surface disturbance within caribou ranges. July Alberta government extends its deferral of the sale of new mineral rights in the range of two of its fifteen caribou herds to include forestry activities in the same area.
The logging deferral will exclude logging from 35 percent of the forest management agreement area held by ANC Timber, Ltd.

Marriage Separation in Canada Are you considering separating from your spouse? If so, below are some important facts and information regarding separations in Canada. We will clarify a few common misconceptions about separations and then help you to understand exactly what a Separation Agreement is and what it needs to cover. In fact, you can remain indefinitely separated from your spouse without ever filing for divorce.
The only legal reason to obtain a divorce is if one partner wishes to remarry. In order to file for divorce in Canada you must first complete a full one year separation period. The only exception to this rule is if your divorce is filed under the grounds of adultery or cruelty. However, if you are using separation as grounds for your divorce, then you must be separated from your spouse for a minimum of one full year.
You can begin the application process for divorce the day that you are separate, but the courts will not grant you your divorce until the full year has passed. If during this one year separation period you and your spouse get back together, this reconciliation will not affect your one year separation period unless you are back together for a period, or multiple periods, equaling more than 90 days. The purpose of this law is to allow couples a chance to try and work on repairing their marriage, without delaying a divorce in the event that their attempts are not successful.
If you do indeed reconcile for a period of or exceeding 90 days and then separate again, you will be required to begin a new full one year separation period before a divorce can be granted.

When the land was put to the plow, many stone tools were discovered and added to personal and museum collections. Within recorded history, the First Nations groups who occupied the area have lived in small family groups, meeting in larger groups during the summer for celebrations, singing and dancing.
In the s, their leaders were chiefs like LaGlace and Pouce Coupe, names given by French traders who could not pronounce their Beaver names. In , after incursions by fur traders, missionaries and Klondike gold seekers, they accepted Treaty No. Soon after the turn of the century, settlers began to squat on the un-surveyed land.
